Using the city of Turin as classroom as well as subject of study and experimentation field, the program aims at working on different levels. Theoretical studies will be complemented and enhanced by the exploration of the surrounding city, and these two aspects will proceed parallel to the acquisition of the technical and preparatory competencies required to realize a number of audiovisual products (short films, documentaries, commercials) that will be played in a special section of one of the various film festivals that take place in the city. The study of the Italian language, specifically focusing on issues under consideration in our program, will help students penetrate the complexities of local culture. In order to attain this result, the program is conceived of as a whole, in which theoretical and practical courses are intertwined and inseparable.
This didactic approach aims at achieving multiple goals. Students will learn to discover a territory in order to then recount and valorize it with their creative works, be they of purely artistic-esthetic nature or promotional. The program will thus appeal to a wide variety of applicants, from film students to professionals working in advertising, tourism or promotion of the territory.
The program will attain its apogee with the display of the students’ works at one of the city film festivals, an event that will allow them to actively participate in the functioning of a film festival. Not only will they be in very close contact with relevant personalities of Italian cinema, but they will also deal with issues like fund raising and film production and distribution dynamics, in order to become able to follow their films through all phases, from first conception to preproduction and postproduction until the delicate, yet not less important moment of distribution.
PARTICIPATION IN EVENTS
Classes will be scheduled around several events that take place in town during the semester. Not only will students have free access to those events, but they will benefit from special opportunities to interact with the protagonists.
Here is a list of the main events:
TORINO FILM FESTIVAL
SOTTODICIOTTO FILM FESTIVAL
Sottodiciotto Filmfestival was born in 2000 due to the initiative of AIACE Torino and Città di Torino – Divisione Servizi Educativi to present the audiovisual productions realised by young people under 18 as well as films related to childhood, adolescence, and youth. The festival includes two different competitions: the national contest for productions realized by schools (kindergarten, primary, middle and high schools) and the national contest for productions independently realized by people under 18. The festival draws an intergenerational audience.
This is a film festival that has taken place in Turin since 1998 and is dedicated to environmental films. A founding member of the Environmental Film Festival Network. The festival maintains the Green Movie Database, an archive of environmental films with pedagogical and research purposes. It also publishes a catalog for each edition, as well as volumes on the relationship between cinema and environment and on documentary cinema.
Important Italian event about computer graphics that takes place every year in Turin between October and November. The conference occurs over several days, offering free events open to the public: international guests (among whom are numerous Oscar winners), national previews, projections, an exhibit space, presentations and encounters, Master Classes and technical lessons held by world experts and important companies in the field (from Softimage to NVIDIA to Autodesk), which grant an extra-academic educational opportunity.
